As a volunteer-based organisation providing emergency assistance and support to the people of Western Australia, we rely on the compassion, commitment, and community knowledge of dedicated volunteers.
Our volunteers come from all walks of life, bringing a wide range of skills and perspectives. United by a shared purpose of helping their community stay safe, they provide an invaluable service when it matters most.
We offer a range of volunteering opportunities, including both operational and non-operational roles.
Operational Volunteers
Throughout the suburbs of Melville and East Fremantle, we provide operational assistance for incidents including;
Many of our volunteers have also had the opportunity to deploy in support of other SES units, both across Western Australia and interstate.
Operational volunteers should be comfortable with;
Working in sometimes adverse weather conditions.
Working on roofs, at heights and climbing ladders.
Using handheld and power tools.
Conducting missing person searches in urban and rural environments.
Support & Administration Volunteers
Not all volunteers respond to incidents. Melville SES also relies on dedicated support volunteers to help keep the unit running effectively behind the scenes.
Support roles may include:
Communications and media support
Community engagement and events
Administrative and coordination tasks
Training and records support
These roles are ideal for people who want to contribute their skills, support operational crews, and make a meaningful difference in their community without attending incidents.
Volunteer Training
All volunteers receive structured training appropriate to their role, with a strong focus on safety, teamwork, and capability.
Please be advised that our weekly training takes place on Tuesday evenings from 1900-2100. A minimum attendance of 75% is expected. Volunteers are also expected to attend training courses which are typically held on weekends.
Some of the skills you'll learn and certified DFES training opportunities available include;
No prior emergency services experience is required — all training is provided, and volunteers are supported as they develop their skills over time.
